The RAW house was a major addition and alteration where we served as the turnkey team who designed, constructed and fabricated all components of the project.

Our design utilises a restrained and raw material palette of; timber shuttered concrete, burmog mahogany, variably treated steel and a muted colour palette were applied to modernize an ageing and mundane building, adapting the space into a contemporary home with a seamless flow between the interior and exterior entertainment areas. A rim flow pool connects with the entertainment area through use of a polished concrete floor, which forms the hard landscape and contains the garden.

A translucent light steel pavilion, equipped with a braai area and an outdoor shower tucked behind a mahogany screen, is at the deep end of the pool.

9 commissioned laser-cut light installation artworks, which depict different views of Johannesburg, are placed along the driveway and front boundary to bring life to otherwise dreary walls.

    NICO VAN LOGGERENBERG

This small labour of love was built for three brothers in an old and winding jacaranda tree. The treehouse connects to the garden via a narrow bridge to two raised platforms fitted with swings, ropes and a fireman’s pole to lose oneself in hours under the grand tree.

A spiral staircase winds around the trunk and is propped by branches severed from the tree. This carries you up into a whimsical space of fantasy tied together with a latte balustrade secured with twine, reminiscent of a bridge you may find in an ancient forest.

We, with architect and friend Nico van Loggerenberg, obsessed about detailing the structure to fit as naturally with the tree and the surrounding garden. This was done through carefully hiding the structural details to keep a raw and natural feeling of the treehouse.

This house is a test in true sustainability. Set into the breath-taking landscapes of the Drakensberg’s Lost Valley the DAM House has been designed to tread lightly on an ecologically sensitive site, be completely off-grid and create an architecture that will be used to teach the local community to build.

Taking into account the limited accessibility to the site, it uses short modular elements that can be easily assembled on site as a series of spaces that can be built in phases. The house sits on the southern edge of the dam and faces north. The doors of the living spaces and the bedrooms stack away, allowing access to the deck floating above the dam and draw the landscape into the home.

Large roof overhangs shade the glazed areas in summer and allow sun in, in winter. Large insulated gutters sit above wide, double-skinned cavity stone walls and exit into the dam. Clerestory windows face east and allow the warm morning sun into the living spaces.
